Q: 1. What are freelance paralegals, virtual paralegals, and paralegal support services?

Paralegal support services and freelance paralegals (sometimes referred to as virtual paralegals) are businesses and independent contractors who provide substantive legal support to attorneys, firms, corporations, and governmental agencies.

Q: 2. Why would I need a freelance paralegal?

Attorneys utilize freelance paralegals for many reasons, such as to:

  • Assist with an overwhelming caseload;
  • Assist with competing priorities or deadlines;
  • Help reduce overhead, cut costs, or free up time for client development;
  • Eliminate the time, cost, and expense of hiring an employee;
  • Fill in for a paralegal away at trial or deposition;
  • Fill in for a paralegal on sick, vacation, or extended leave;
  • Fill the gap while you’re looking for a new paralegal employee; or
  • Provide relief to your current staff from their workload.

Q: 3. How will I know when it’s time to start using a paralegal support service?

When you experience any of the scenarios in #2, or you decide to utilize a simpler business model. 

You may want to establish a relationship with a service now, though, so you have support in place if and when you find yourself in any of the above situations.

You may also realize you need a paralegal support service after accepting a large or unique client matter that requires more time and attention than you and your current staff have.

Q: 4. How do I find a freelance paralegal?

Start by defining positive and negative attributes of a successful partnership. Consider:

  • What is important to you and your practice;
  • Your goals in working with a freelance paralegal;
  • What you want and need from the relationship;
  • What you’re looking to achieve; and
  • What would make such a partnership beneficial and successful.

Then you’ll know what to look for, and can search based on this knowledge.

Q: 5. How does it work?

That depends on you! Depending on your needs, a freelance paralegal may provide paralegal support services occasionally (only when the need arises), or regularly (providing daily or weekly support).

Q: 6. How do I get started?

Identify your needs and expectations. Determine how you will utilize the paralegal service, the types of tasks you’ll be delegating, and who will be responsible for providing the tools necessary to complete those tasks. It is also critical to outline parameters of the business relationship, including fees, deadlines, and possible limitations.

Q: 7. How do you ensure direction and supervision over work product?

Direction and supervision are not only paramount in an attorney’s work with a paralegal (whether in your office or their own), they are also ethical obligations. 

When you utilize our services, you’ll find no difference between supervising our work and the work of a paralegal in your office. Communication is the key to success, and an absolute requirement in receiving our support. 

It’s your responsibility to review and approve work product; we will not take any further action on work product we produce for you until you review, approve, and request next steps.

Q: 8. Should I worry about confidentiality and security?

Yes, you should.  And as a licensed attorney, it’s your responsibility.  But with our services, it will be your last concern.

We go above and beyond the requirements of confidentiality and security. Think of our services not as subtracting a layer of security, but as adding one!

Q: 9. We’re really interested in retaining paralegal support, and we’ve already decided it’s the best option for us. Yet we’re still hesitating. How does it work? Really?

Q: 10. How do I make the most of paralegal support?

Get to know your paralegals. Get a feel for their strengths and weaknesses, training and experience. Learn about their interests, and find out if they feel like their skills are being fully utilized. Have regular conversations. COMMUNICATE!
